This small cemetery in Edgefield, South Carolina, is the 2nd most historical cemetery in South Carolina. It is the final resting place for four governors, including Strom Thurmond, Francis W. The oldest grave at Willowbrook Cemetery dates back to 1820 and belongs to Pierre LaBorde, who was from France and died at 50.
Willowbrook also has soldiers buried here from every major war fought by the United States, from the American Revolution to the Vietnam War.
One of the strangest graves in the cemetery is that of Dr. James Adam DeVore, who was a bit eccentric. It is said that he insisted he be buried upright behind a sheet of glass with a trap door on top of his grave with stairs that lead to his tomb so his family could visit. Later, the grave was filled with dirt because of so many visitors. you can’t make this stuff up!

Some of the notables interred here include Lucy Holcomb Pickens (the Queen of the Confederacy), Reverend John Lake (who was a missionary to China and started a leper colony in the South China Sea), Chancellor Francis Hugh Wardlaw (who was the author of the Ordinance of Secession adopted by South Carolina), and Preston Smith Brooks (who served during the Mexican War as captain of Company D, Palmetto Regiment and became famous for caning Charles Sumner on the floor of the National House of Representatives).
