Reba Gets A New Sitcom Pilot On NBC

Just one season after joining NBC’s The Voice, Reba will star in a new sitcom pilot for NBC. The pilot is the first order of the 2024 season for the network.

The comedy pilot, which has yet to be titled and no cast members have been announced except for Reba, will be with former Reba showrunner Kevin Abbott. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Abbott is set to write the script for the project.

The potential series will revolve around Reba’s character, who inherits her father’s restaurant. She is less than thrilled to discover she has a new business partner in the half-sister she never knew she had.

In this journalist’s opinion, the part of the half-sister should be played by former Reba TV sitcom co-star and good friend to McEntire, Melissa Peterman. The two have such chemistry and have worked together many times since meeting on the Reba sitcom in 2001. Reba told me in an interview, “With Melissa Peterman, everything is always fun.”

A few years ago, Reba told me how much she’s tried getting her Reba sitcom to get a new life. I asked what we as fans could do, and she said, “Call your congressman. I’ve been trying to get a reboot since we left. We have so many more stories to tell. I sure hope that happens.”

There is no word yet on whether the new sitcom will be a reboot of the Reba sitcom, which ran from 2001 to 2007. The 127 episodes originally aired on the CW network. That sitcom can currently be streamed on Hulu and the Hallmark Channel in re-runs.

Reba also has a sitcom that lasted only one season on ABC called Malibu Country with comedian Lily Tomlin.

Watching the new show come to life and seeing who gets cast to play opposite this country music icon will be exciting.

Five Reba Music Videos That Are Classics

  • "Is There Life Out There" (1991)

    Reba plays a waitress in this dramatic music video that was also a TV movie. The story and drama of this video are lovely, and this journalist also has a soft spot for it. Full disclosure: I was an extra in the film and video as a graduate in cap and gown. It was filmed at Vanderbilt’s campus in Nashville. This is the video Reba won the ACM Award in 1991 for Video of the Year. Singer Huey Lewis stars as her husband in the music video. In the 1994 TV movie, actor Keith Carradine plays that part.

  • "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia" (1991)

    This is another music video that could be a movie. Reba notes it as one of her favorite songs. In the video, Reba plays her character as an older woman as she tells the story. Her character is the little sister and convicted killer in the sad story.

  • "Whoever's in New England" (1986)

    In 1987, McEntire won the GRAMMY Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance for this song. It was her first GRAMMY win. The music video was one of Reba’s first to really show her dramatic actress side.

  • "Does He Love You" with Dolly Parton (2021)

    Reba did this song and a music video for it in 1993 with Linda Davis. However, in 2021, she made music history when she redid the duet with country icon Dolly Parton. It was the first time the two country Queens recorded a song together. Their performance of the song was nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Country Duo/Group Performance in 2022. The version of the song with Davis won the GRAMMY award for Best Country Vocal Collaboration in 1994.

  • "Fancy" (1991)

    This is Reba’s biggest hit and her most talked about music video. When Carrie Underwood scored her 15th number-one song on country radio “Church Bells,” in 2016, she recalled that when the song came out, she believed it was sort of a smaller version of Reba’s song.

    Underwood told me about it in a recent interview. “‘Church Bells’ is like ‘Fancy’s’ little sister (laughs) — Reba and ‘Fancy.’ And she gets out and makes a name for herself by, you know, she’s got her dancin’ dress and all that stuff. And this one she starts, you know, she’s young, she’s pretty, she’s poor — doin’ what she can to survive, meets a man that has a lot of wealth and is supposed to, you know, take care of her and get her out of this.”

Nancy Brooks has been working in the country music industry for almost 30 years. She has interviewed pretty much any country star you can think of. In the late 1990s, she started working with Dolly Parton. And yes, Nancy reports that Parton is as sweet as you would think. She loves her life in country music and has been backstage at every CMA Awards show since the late 1990s. Many of her stories are from her one-on-one interviews. She was there at the beginning of the incredible careers of many music superstars today, including Taylor Swift, Shania Twain, and Blake Shelton, and has interviewed them multiple times throughout the years.
