Dub [00:00:00] Kicks 99. It’s Dub and Cody getting ready for the Kicks 99 Songwriter Series powered by Queensborough National Bank And Trust coming up a week from today, next Friday at the Columbia County Performing Arts Center. We’ve got Lee Thomas Miller is going to be there. We got Liz Rose, and we’ve got the Warren Brothers, Brett and Brad, and we got Brad Warren on the phone with us right now. Brad, what’s going on, man?
Brad Warren [00:00:21] Not too much, not too much. Enjoying this ever-changing Nashville weather.
Dub [00:00:25] For sure, if it’s anything like it is here, you’re probably wearing a tank top today. Probably a hoodie tomorrow, maybe a ski parka by the weekend. You never know.
Brad Warren [00:00:35] And I’m the psycho. I just it’s actually freezing cold here, and I just cold plunged in the pool. And honestly, I’m kind of shivering as I talk to you guys. I probably should have waited till after this.
Cody [00:00:43] Oh my goodness. Do the cold plunges actually work?
Brad Warren [00:00:47] Absolutely, absolutely. I mean it’s unbelievable. Inflammation whatever. That’s a whole different subject you don’t want to go into, but absolutely works.
Dub [00:00:56] I’ve been telling her I was because I’ve done one before and I tried to get her to do it and she just wouldn’t she wouldn’t do it. She told me she was like, I don’t want to be cold.
Cody [00:01:03] I hate being cold, but I’ve heard so many good benefits.
Brad Warren [00:01:06] I’m not going to lie, it sucks. But it’s like the three minutes make the other the rest of your day better. But yeah, I get it. My wife’s not doing it either.
Cody [00:01:13] Three minutes. That’s a lot.
Dub [00:01:15] That’s what she said. Anyway. I couldn’t pass it up. Okay. So, we got the Kicks 99 Songwriter Series. We got to get back on track here. Got the Kicks 99 Songwriter Series coming up a week from tonight. Now, Brad. So we kind of know, you know, what to expect with these songwriter events and stuff like that. But our friends out there in Kicks country, our listeners, they may not know quite what to expect. So can you kind of give everybody a little bit of, a taste bud teaser as to what’s going down a week from tonight at the Columbia County Performing Arts Center?
Brad Warren [00:01:48] Yeah, this is kind of like the story behind the songs. It’s instead of just, a lot of these songs you’ve heard on the radio, hopefully all of them. Most of them, you’ve heard them on the radio from your favorite artist from Taylor Swift to Tim McGraw to Toby Keith. You know, whoever it might be. And, this is like the stories behind the songs, how we wrote them, where we got the ideas to write them, how we got them recorded by the big artists. And so really kind of a behind the scenes look at the songs and then play you our versions, which is the songwriter versions always is always interesting to me. And, a lot of people are like, that’s even better than the concert, because you kind of get the inside scoop on the song that you’ve been listening to for 20 years. And, and hear the to hear the songwriter perform it, it’s, it’s just an interesting it’s a really different take on. It’s kind of a songwriter night and, a storytelling night.
Dub [00:02:34] Yeah. It’s going to be so much fun. We’ve been talking about this for a long, long time, and, and it’s going to be so much fun, and we hope everybody’s going to join us. So here’s what we want to do. Yeah. So we, we were kind of going through y’all’s catalog and my goodness, just the hits that you and your brother have written are just incredible. But we’ve noticed that you’ve written quite a bit for Tim McGraw. What is that like?
Brad Warren [00:02:54] We’re like the Kato Kaelin of the McGraw family.
Dub [00:02:57] Exactly. Living in the guest house out there on the McGraw property? Yeah.
Brad Warren [00:03:02] Yeah, we’re kind of in the career. Yeah, exactly, exactly.
Dub [00:03:05] Okay, so what’s a story that most people probably haven’t heard about Tim McGraw that we can actually tell on the radio without giving getting in trouble with the boss?
Brad Warren [00:03:14] Nothing for him is just an activity. If you have to keep score, you have to be competing. So we go spearfishing a lot. Like we use to have a place in Bahamas and we would go down to Spearfish. And literally he had like this big claw and whoever shot the biggest fish of the day got to wear it around the whole night. Like I don’t want to wear the damn claw anyway. It’s heavy. It’s not fun, but everything we played basketball in the road and he had a tournament for the entire tour, and we still laugh about it with Jason Aldean’s band. We played volleyball at that their island and had like volleyball tournaments and whoever won, he made trophies. I mean, I’m not kidding. Everything is a competition.
Cody [00:03:54] That is hilarious. I’m a competitive person, so I think I would enjoy that.
Dub [00:03:57] You probably would.
Brad Warren [00:03:59] But he’s on stun. He’s like the Michael Jordan of music or something.
Dub [00:04:04] That’s that’s great. But you know what though, when you look at the man and he hasn’t had a carb since, you know, I don’t know, 99, you know, you can kind of imagine that. Yeah. You can kind of bet. Yeah. That checks out. That makes sense.
Brad Warren [00:04:14] It is not an accident that that is a part of his personality with his career. That is absolutely not not an accident. Like he has a gear that no one else I’ve ever met.
Dub [00:04:24] Right, right.
Cody [00:04:25] He’s just built different.
Dub [00:04:26] For sure. Yeah, you can tell. So another cool thing I wanted to bring up because, you know, we talked about how this songwriter series is very similar to our Kicks 99 Guitar Pull that we’ve been doing. This year is going to be our 25th year. Fun fact the Warren brothers were not only on the first Kicks 99 Guitar Pull, but on the third one as well. Do you guys remember that way back in the day?
Brad Warren [00:04:44] I certainly do, hey, by the way, shout out to my boy Tee Gentry, who has literally been so good to us for so, so many years in our career. But yeah, I absolutely remember that. And, you know, it’s a time we had not done much of this. This was kind of a we were still. How long ago was this to tell you we were still being artists? And and traveling around trying to get people to play our stuff. So I remember doing that. How much fun it was. How responsive the crowd was. And it’s literally kind of, you know, full circle, where we’ve just been writing for other artists for the last 20 years, and now we’re doing a ton of these shows and it’s awesome. We are absolutely loving performing again, but having something that people care about to perform really helps.
Dub [00:05:25] You’re absolutely right. You know, because that first Guitar Pull, not a lot of people knew what it was like. You say the word Guitar Pull and they’re like what? Now it’s the biggest show in Augusta. It’s been going again this year will be our 25th year. And so I think that that songwriters, this songwriter series, this being the first one, not a lot of people, they may not know exactly what it is, but they’re going to walk away. And that was awesome. I want to see that again.
Cody [00:05:46] But maybe that’s the beginning because, you know, the Warren Brothers were on the first Guitar Pull, and now you guys are on the first songwriters series. You got some big shoes to fill.
Brad Warren [00:05:55] Yep, I want to be the Fireplug.
Dub [00:05:56] Yeah. Like the the Warren brothers country music’s guinea pigs.
Brad Warren [00:06:02] Absolutely. You have no idea. Yeah.
Dub [00:06:04] I love it. Hey, Brad, thank you so much for for hanging with us this morning, man. It’s been great.
