This Could Be The Number 1 Burger In South Carolina
I’m always on the hunt for the next great burger. Recently, I found it in Charleston, South Carolina. It was unexpected. I mean, I’ve had great burgers and lots of them. So, when I walked into this place, I thought, “OK, show me what you got.” What I got was quite possibly the number 1 burger in South Carolina.
It was a busy Tuesday morning in the Holy City. I arrived downtown just before lunch and made my way to a place I had heard about but never ventured into.
Heavy’s Barburger is located in Charleston, near the city’s busy port area on Morrison Street.
First things first. I’ve always said that if a restaurant has a gravel parking lot with lots of pickup trucks, you will enjoy your meal. Guaranteed.
Prove me wrong.
Now, a gravel parking lot is normal on backroads, but not downtown Charleston. I wasn’t expecting it there. It made the place kind of stand out.
Inside, there were just a few people – more employees than customers. It was still early, around 11 a.m. I found out real quick however, that this place will fill up quickly.
Fortunately, not before I got my order in.
The guy at the bar told me he recommended the original Barburger on your first visit, but that everything is excellent.
Hmmm, a little cocky, perhaps?
Nope. He wasn’t. He knew it would be good.
I ordered the Barburger all the way with fries. The meat was too big for the bun and fun to eat. The kind of fun you have when the toppings slide out of the burger, and you don’t care if people are watching. The crinkle-cut fries were seasoned just right and had a perfect crispness to them.
He placed the plate in front of me and said, this will be the best burger you’ve ever had. Don’t doubt him folks. He was right.
He showed me the restaurant’s Burger Battle Championship belt for 2023. It’s like a wrestling belt with a chain on it hanging proudly behind the bar. A badge of burger honor, hoisted proudly for all to see.
Make sure you check this place out on your next trip to Charleston. Heavy’s Barburger is a great little dive in the middle of Charlston – with a gravel parking lot.
I’ll be back.
