Day Trip From Augusta: Macon, GA – 2hr, 11min
My first time in Macon, GA. It’s a great ride from Augusta….not too far and pretty scenic on the way—Day Trip From Augusta: Macon, GA – 2hr, 11min
The Big House
First on my list was the Big House, fans of the southern rock group, The Allman Brothers, know this is the house where the band lived together for a few years in the 70s. I can only imagine what an average week there would have been like.
When I arrived at the Big House, I was greeted by a nice lady, paid my $20, and got a map of the house and a description of each room. It was fantastic to go back in time and see all the awards, guitars, personal living spaces, and tons of backstage passes collected during their career.
An Autograph
While there, a guy walked up to me and told me he was signing books and introduced himself as Willie Perkins, the Allman Brothers tour manager for many years, and he is from Augusta. Fascinating guy, and we talked for a while. He autographed his book for my brother and me and told me how he became the Allman Brothers manager.
1970
He described it as a strange series of events that got weird quickly. He said he had a good friend who was their tour manager, and he kept telling him he had to see them and said they were great. His friend told him that they couldn’t hire him because they didn’t have any money but promised him the next position they would need, they would hire him. It was 1970 when the Allman Brothers were first starting out, and after he saw them, he knew he had to work with them.
A Strange Twist To The Story
Twings Lyndon was the tour manager, and Willie ended up replacing him after Twings got into an argument over money due to the band with a club owner. He killed the club owner. I told you it was a strange story. The band called Willie and told him that Twiggs said he would be great for the job, and he was hired.
The Big House is a great place to visit, full of music history, and Macon, GA, is a fascinating city. Let me know if you go!
