Three Weekend Deaths from Separate Accidents in Richmond County
The Richmond County Coroner’s Office is investigating three weekend deaths from separate incidents, one resulting in the death of an infant.
Two-month-old Mason Lewis of Center West Parkway died Saturday as a result of a traffic accident in Augusta during the summer. Coroner Mark Bowen said Lewis’ father was involved in a two-vehicle crash August 14 at Kissingbower Road and Milledgeville Road. The newborn was transported to Wellstar MCG. He died Saturday night at the hospital after spending two months there. An autopsy has been scheduled.
Early Saturday morning, Richmond County deputies were called to a single vehicle accident on Bobby Jones Expressway at Wheeler Road. Bowen said 42-year-old James Allen Griffin of the 3000 block of Sterling Road lost control of his vehicle. It left the road and rolled several times, ejecting Griffin. He was taken to Doctors Hospital where he was pronounced dead Saturday at 2:53 a.m. An autopsy has been scheduled.
Also Saturday morning, Richmond County deputies were called to a report of another deadly accident involving a pedestrian. Bowen said 39-year-old Barry Anthony Smith Jr was hit by a westbound vehicle while trying to cross the 1800 block of Gordon Highway. Smith, who was homeless, was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:18 a.m. An autopsy has been scheduled. Smith’s death marked the fifth pedestrian fatality this month.
