Richmond County Schools Considering Year-Round Calendar
The Richmond County Board of Education is considering two options for the 2025-2026 academic school year and one includes a move to a year-round calendar.
Seniors leaders of the Richmond County School System presented the two options to those in attendance at Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting. Students, parents, employees and the community are now being asked to provide feedback through an online survey. Both calendars have the same number of school days.
Calendar Option 1:
- Offers PowerUp Asynchronous Learning Days
- 4 digital learning days where students complete assignments at home on their school-issued devices.
- Parents and guardians would have a chance to meet with school staff on PowerUp Asynchronous Learning Days.
- The school year would begin August 4 and 5, 2025, depending on grade level.
- The school year would end May 22, 2026.
- Summer break would be 10 weeks.
Calendar Option 2:
- Year-round calendar with two week-long intercessions for intervention and enrichment in both semesters.
- The Calendar Option 2 school year would start July 24, 2025.
- The school year would end May 20, 2026.
- The summer break would be 7.5 weeks.
The calendars and a feedback survey are posted at rcboe.info/25-26RCSSCalendar.
The deadline to provide feedback is February 15, 2024.
A recommendation on the 2025-2026 academic calendar will be made during the March Board of Education.
Aiken and Edgefield Schools Switched to Modified Calendar in 2023
Aiken and Edgefield County public schools made the switch to a modified calendar at the beginning of the 2023-2024 academic year.
- Students started school July 25, with a fall break October 2-13. October 2-6 was a designated intercession week.
- Thanksgiving break was November 22-24.
- Christmas break was December 20, 2023 to January 3, 2024.
- Spring break will be April 1-12, with intercession week set for April 1-5.
- The last day of school will be Thursday, May 30, 2024.
- This is Edgefield County’s second year on the modified calendar schedule.
The switch to year-round school, which is in place in many school districts across the country, was designed to help with learning retention, as well as offer longer breaks throughout the year to help prevent teacher and student burnout.
