More Daylight This Month – How Much More In Georgia And South Carolina?
Do you love wintertime? It’s cold and the days seem shorter due to less daylight. But if you’re not a fan of less sunlight, there’s good news. During the month of January, we gradually start getting more daylight. In some parts of the United States, they will get up to an hour of more sunlight by the end of the month. So, how much more daylight will we see in Georgia and South Carolina?
Wintertime Blues
There’s no escaping it. Winter comes around each year. Although, in Georgia and South Carolina, the severity of “winter” we might experience can vary tremendously. But we all experience some degree of colder weather and shorter days.
Thankfully, the “shortest” day of the year is behind us. That landed on December 21st. And that means, it’s only up from here! The days gradually start to get longer after the winter solstice.
This is great news for sunshine lovers. There’s just something about those short, cold, dreary days that can really affect some people. In fact, there are many people who suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
SAD is a type of depression that’s related to the change of seasons, and can often begin around fall and last through the long winter months. It can be the reverse though, and affect someone in spring and summer and resolve in the fall and winter months. Symptoms of SAD can include a lack of energy and mood changes. Treatment for SAD can include light therapy, psychotherapy, and/or medication.
As someone who loves sunshine and warmer weather, I am always ready for those longer days. And according to an article from Fox 8 in Ohio, we’ll see a little bit longer days this month!
More Daylight For Georgia And South Carolina
According to the graph on Fox 8’s article, Savannah, Georgia was getting about 10 hours and 6 minutes of sunlight on January 1st. By the end of the month, they will see an additional 32 minutes of daylight by January 31st.
When it comes to South Carolina, the graph shows Charleston had around 10 hours and 2 minutes of daylight on January 1st. But, by January 31st, they’re expected to see 34 more minutes of daylight.
While it doesn’t seem like much, for those of us who live for those longer days, it’s something to look forward to.
And if you’re wondering who will see the most change… it’s Anchorage, Alaska! At the beginning of the year, they only experienced 5 hours and 39 minutes of daylight. But by the end of the month, they’ll gain 2 hours and 2 minutes! Now that’s a significant difference. And also makes us very grateful we live in the South! Can you imagine having so little daylight?
