Going To The Library – Do People Still Go?

Honestly, I hadn’t thought about going to the library in a really long time.  But during the summer, we had my stepdaughter.  We wound up going to the library and getting a library card so she would have some books to read. I think we only went once during the summer.  So since then, I’ve just been carrying around my library card in my wallet. But… I LOVE to read!  I’ve been mostly ordering books on Amazon.  And now the bookshelf my fiancé built for me is getting REALLY full!

Getting Books

I started thinking about it about a month ago.  Most of the books I’ve ordered, I mostly read just once and then they sit on the shelf. There are a few I’ve read a couple of times since many of them are personal development books.  I can glean different things from them each time.  But I was thinking about all the money I’ve spent on books… When I could just go to the library and check them out for free. So I decided to put my library card to use!

A few weeks ago I went to the library to check out some books.  One thing I ran into was not finding some of the books I was looking for.  Maybe I was looking in the wrong place, but I didn’t see many of the personal development books I was searching for.  I did use their computer to look up some, and they didn’t have some of the books. I did find a couple of books and checked those out. But, I also decided I’d check out the fiction books. To be honest, I couldn’t remember the last time I’d read a book for pleasure!  And I had NO idea where to start.  I wound up going with an author I used to love – Nicholas Sparks.  There were a couple of his books. A few I knew I’d read, and the others I couldn’t remember if I had or not! But I wound up getting “Every Breath.”

The Love Of Reading

I read the book in less than a day! I forgot just how much I love to read fiction. The other two books took me a bit longer to get through… but I finally finished the last one yesterday.  Then I went to return them last night after work.  By this point, I’d asked my Facebook friends for recommendations and had a few authors to search for!

I’ve heard so many good things about “Where The Crawdads Sing” so I looked for that one.  I didn’t think they had one available, but turns out they did!  It’s the large print edition, but I don’t mind! I also checked out a book by Kristin Hannah called “Between Sisters.” I’m excited to dive into these books!

So, is going to the library still a thing? For me, it’s definitely going to become a more frequent thing! I will say, last night around 6:30 p.m. there were quite a few cars in the parking lot! So maybe I’ve just been out of touch with how many people actually still use the library.  But if you haven’t been to your local library lately… I’d say check it out!

I know millennials are making bookstores popular again… but I think supporting your local library is great, and can save you some money!

5 Favorite Personal Development Books in 2022

Pretty sure I’ve mentioned before that I love to read.  And specifically, I’ve been really enjoying personal development books. I believe we all need to work on ourselves, and I always learn a lot about myself when I read these type of books.  It’s also helpful in understanding other people!  And for leaders, there’s always something you can learn to better yourself!

So far, I’ve read 10 books this year.  Actually, I’m about to finish my 11th book of the year.  I think that’s the accurate count.  I’ve been trying to make notes in my phone whenever I finish reading a book.  You might remember, for Mother’s Day, my fiancé bought me a stack of books.  And I couldn’t have been happier!  I’d had them all on my Amazon Wish List. And I feel like I’m always adding to that list!

While fiction books can be entertaining, I would rather spend my time reading to educate myself.  I believe we should never stop learning!  And we should always be striving to be the best version of ourselves… for ourselves first.  But also for everyone else in our lives too!

  • The High 5 Habit by Mel Robbins

    How many times have you high-fived a friend, teammate, co-worker?  You don’t high-five someone you’re not encouraging or celebrating with, right?  So… when’s the last time you took time to celebrate YOU? This book talks about high-fiving yourself in the mirror, gaining confidence, appreciating yourself.

    I love Mel Robbins.  Maybe because I recognize a lot of my own qualities in her.  She’s extremely smart, encouraging, and inspirational.  I won’t say motivational– only because motivation comes and goes.  You have to truly commit, and be dedicated… even when motivation is lacking.

  • The Gifts of Imperfection by Brené Brown

    This was an eye opening book for me.  I am a perfectionist.  To a fault.  I stress myself out over it.  I’m overwork, overthink, over-do… And while I’m working on it, it’s a daily process! I love her stories, and the ideas of living authentically and wholeheartedly.  Definitely one I’ll have to re-read.  SO good.  I definitely need to re-read the chapter about self-compassion!

  • Super Attractor by Gabrielle Bernstein

    I’m not even sure where I stumbled upon Gabrielle Bernstein, but I am loving her work.  While some of it is a bit out of my personal beliefs… There are some GREAT things I have learned from her.  There are also many things that she talks about that I’ve experienced and am working through.  She gives it to you straight.  Super Attractor is definitely a good read… and a reminder that it’s GOOD TO FEEL GOOD! When we feel good, good things happen!

  • The Untethered Soul by Michael Singer

    Again, as someone who is a perfectionist and over-thinker, The Untethered Soul was an eye-opening book.  Life doesn’t have to be so difficult.  And worrying about the future, or dwelling in the past, really does us no good.

    This is a book to encourage you to be more present in your life.  Have you ever driven somewhere, and then realized you don’t even remember the drive?  So many people live on autopilot, and it keeps us from embracing our lives in the here and now.

  • The Universe Has Your Back by Gabrielle Bernstein

    Yep, another Gabby Bernstein book.  Just GOOD stuff to learn in all of her stuff.  The current book I’m reading is another one of her 9 books!  She’s a great writer, speaker, story-teller… It’s about gaining confidence in yourself and trusting that good things are available to you.  Releasing the blocks that keep you from embracing a great life!

“Cody” Blaine Jackson is one half of the Kicks Wake Up Krew on Kicks 99, and also serves as the Digital Program Director for Beasley Media Group in Augusta. She’s a Georgia native but currently resides just across the river in South Carolina. She started in the radio industry as a part-time board operator, and moved up through various roles, including on-air positions and program director for multiple stations. Her passions include fitness and anything to do with animals, as she has two fur babies, her dogs Harley and Waylon. Cody likes to write about pets, fitness and Augusta local events.
