About National Night Out
National Night Out is a national community-building campaign encouraging better relationships between the community and their local law enforcement and first responders. It’s held on the first Tuesday in August.
The original National Night Out was introduced in August 1984 by a volunteer at a community watch program. He saw the need to bring together law enforcement and the community in 1970, and in 1981, the National Association of Town Watch was established. Then just 3 years later, National Night Out was introduced.
The idea behind encouraging the relationships between neighbors and law enforcement is that the best way to build safer communities is through knowing the people in it and the surroundings. Instead of isolating ourselves from each other, National Night Out aims to help us get to know each other and rediscover our community.
