GOOD VIBES: Principal Gets Night Job At Walmart To Help Low-Income Students
By day, Henry Darby is a beloved principal at North Charleston High School. That’s a full time job in itself, but by night, Mr. Darby also works third shift at his local Walmart, stocking shelves from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
The supplemental income isn’t for himself, though. Mr. Darby took on the extra work to raise money for an emergency fund for low-income students at his school. “Many students at this school live in poverty,” Darby told the Post And Courier. From August to December of 2020, Mr. Darby had earned $2,500 dollars for the students’ emergency fund.
After word of Mr. Darby’s efforts got around the community, local business owners wanted to get involved. One real estate agent was in disbelief at Darby’s generosity. “I just didn’t think it was real,” he told the Post & Courier. “His story is insane.”
Members of the community then started a GoFundMe for the students, which has raised over $6,000 to date.
Mr. Darby says that generosity is his way of paying it forward. “People really helped me to get to where I am today,” he tells the Post And Courier. “I wish that those of us who are born of poverty and we had to struggle and we made it to at least the lower middle class, that we will look back to help others.”
