Update: Female Killed at UGA was Augusta University Nursing Student
A female student found dead this afternoon at the University of Georgia‘s campus in Athens was an Augusta University nursing student.
Augusta University officials have confirmed she was a student at the College of Nursing campus in Athens, though her name has not been released.
University Police were called at noon from a person who was concerned about the victim’s welfare. She had reportedly gone to the intramural fields for a run earlier this morning and never returned as expected.
Police combed that area and said they found a female unconscious and not breathing in a wooded area behind Lake Herrick at 12:38 pm. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said she had visible injuries and say foul play is suspected.
At a 7:00 pm news conference tonight, UGA Police Chief Jeffrey L. Clark said the victim was not a UGA student, but confirmed she was a student at another university that he would not name. He also said so far there are no suspects.
Another Death Reported on Campus Wednesday:
One day earlier, the sudden death of another student by suicide at Brumby Hall was reported.
“The past 24 hours have been a traumatic time for our university. Our student body is grieving the sudden death of one of our students in Brumby Hall last night. And as we continue to mourn that tragic loss of life, today’s devastating news will uniquely test the resolve of our campus community, particularly our students,” according to the university’s social media outlet UGA Today.
UGA President Dr. Jere Morehead canceled classes for the remainder of the day today and all day Friday.
A statement from UGA Police said, “We have been fully briefed on this terrible situation. Foul play is suspected, and we are already receiving support from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Athens-Clarke County Police Department to investigate this crime. We want to assure you that the safety and welfare of our campus community is our top concern.”
