Plane Crashed Near Daniel Field in Augusta, One Dead
A plane crashed near Daniel Field off Wrightsboro Road in Augusta this morning leaving the pilot dead.
The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office said the plane crashed into a tree in a resident’s yard and burst into flames. Witnesses say it was a small, private plane and not a commercial aircraft. The single-engine plane took off from Daniel Field and was returning when the crash occurred, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen confirmed the death of the pilot. He said the person’s identity will not be released at this time.
The FAA has been called to investigate the crash. They say the intersection of Hillcrest Avenue at Belmont Drive will be closed for the next 48 hours.
