Fuel Tax Suspension and State of Emergency Will Continue Another Week in Georgia
The fuel tax suspension and State of Emergency that Georgia Governor Brian Kemp put into effect following Hurricane Helene has been extended once again, but only for 62 of the state’s 159 counties.
Kemp issued the State of Emergency just days before Helene’s arrival due to the anticipated severe impacts from the storm. On October 1, Kemp suspended the collection of motor fuel and diesel fuel taxes, saving residents more than 30 cents a gallon as they sought fuel for generators and power equipment needed for debris removal.
Today, Kemp extended the State of Emergency and fuel tax suspension for counties in South and East Georgia as storm recovery work continues.
“As Georgia communities hit hard by Hurricane Helene continue to rebuild, I want to assure them that we aren’t going anywhere until they’re fully recovered. Our commitment remains unwavering, even if the news cycle has already moved on,” said Kemp.
The State of Emergency and fuel tax suspension were due to expire at 11:59 pm October 16, but that’s been extended another week and are now scheduled to expire at 11:59 pm October 23.
Georgia counties in the CSRA are among the dozens that are covered in today’s extension.
Fuel Tax Suspension and State of Emergency Will Continue for 62 Counties Including:
- Burke
- Columbia
- Emanuel
- Jefferson
- Lincoln
- McDuffie
- Richmond
- Screven
- Taliaferro
- Warren
- Washington
- Wilkes
A reminder that during a State of Emergency, price gouging protections are in effect for the counties included in Governor Kemp’s order.
The Executive Order invokes the Price Gouging Statute as it pertains to goods and services necessary for preparation, response and recovery activities.
To report suspected price gouging or fraud, contact the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division at 404-651-8600 or 800-869-1123.
