There’s A Petition To Rename Strom Thurmond High School
A petition on change.org has accumulated more than 300 signatures, all in favor of renaming Strom Thurmond High School in Edgefield County.
The petition was started by Ashley Hart Adams, who says in the document, “Any venue in which a known racist is named and being glorified should be taken down and changed to reflect a more equal and inclusive America.”
Ashley posted her petition last week, on the heels of a similar petition on change.org to rename the Strom Thurmond Fitness & Wellness Center at USC Columbia.
In the petition, Ashley notes that a previous attempt in the 1970’s to change the school’s name was unsuccessful. You can read the petition in its entirety here.
According to an article the Aiken Standard, school officials have not yet issued a statement in response to the petition.
