TACOCAT Augusta – A Tasty First Experience
UPDATE 05/31/2024: Congratulations to TACOCAT Augusta for being voted the best tacos in the CSRA with our Taco Takedown!!
A few weeks ago, my fiancé, David, and I were downtown and looking for somewhere to grab dinner. That night, we decided to check out Manny’s Sports On Broad because I’d heard good things about it from a few folks at the office. But while we were there, we noticed TACOCAT Augusta almost right across the street. I added it to my mental list of restaurants to try. So, this past Saturday, we were yet again looking to grab food, and David said he wanted to try something we hadn’t had before. That’s when I suggested TACOCAT.
Saturday At TACOCAT Augusta
Saturday was a beautiful, warm day. And one thing I immediately loved about TACOCAT is the fact that they have outdoor seating. Well, it’s basically open air in most of the restaurant with these large garage doors rolled up. Initially, they were going to seat us toward the back of the restaurant, but I asked to be seated “outside.”
Even though we were there around 12 noon, we were seated immediately. The waitress brought over some water and took our drink orders. I couldn’t resist. I had to try out the TACOCAT margarita. This, from what I could tell, was their “house margarita.”
Soon, the waitress was delivering drinks and asked if we were ready to order. Now, at a place called TACOCAT, of course they have tacos. But they also have a portion on the menu that says, “Not Tacos.” But me, being the picky eater that I am, settled for an Americano taco. It’s a crunchy taco with beef, cheese, lettuce, and tomato. I got mine without the veggies… I also ordered chips and queso, because… how could I not?
We had my stepdaughter with us, and she ordered the chicken quesadilla. And David decided to go with the Carne Asada Fries. It didn’t take long at all for our food to come out. The chips and queso came out with a large helping of chips and the queso in a small cast iron skillet. It was a generous portion. My taco is exactly what you would expect.
As for the quesadilla, it was huge! My stepdaughter only wound up eating half of hers and boxing the rest up to take home. David’s Carne Asada Fries looked like a work of art, and also a huge portion. He wound up eating the majority of it, but took the rest home. Overall, we were all happy with our food choices and have already decided we’d go back again sometime.
What To Expect At TACOCAT
Prior to checking out the menu on their website, I would have assumed this was a “Mexican” restaurant. With things like tacos and chips and queso, it’s easy enough to assume. But according to the website, it’s more “Tex-Mex”. And I will say, their queso isn’t like most Mexican restaurants. It was still good, but not what I was expecting when I ordered queso.
Another thing to note, you don’t get chips and salsa like you would at a regular Mexican restaurant. You have to order it. When it comes to sides, you can order chips, fries, guac, queso, salsa, or rice and black beans.
They have 8 different tacos to choose from. There’s also the option to order all 8 signature tacos. Other menu items include fried chicken wings, nachos, tortas (sandwiches), TACOCAT salad, and more. On Saturdays and Sundays they also have brunch, served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. I was tempted to order their Churro French Toast, but wasn’t really wanting something sweet for lunch that day.
The restaurant located at 208 10th Street in Downtown Augusta. They are open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. And on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There are also live music nights. Check out their upcoming schedule HERE.
I’m not sure what their nights are like. It’s important to remember they have a bar, so I can imagine the weekends are a bit busier and nights might not be as kid-friendly. But for a Saturday afternoon, it was perfect for adults and kids alike.
