Famous Wall At Elvis’ Graceland Mansion Targeted By Graffiti
It’s a must for any Elvis fan who makes the trip to Memphis to visit the King’s home: you sign the brick wall that surrounds the Graceland mansion.
There are thousands upon thousands of messages & signatures on the wall from fans all over the world – literally – and they’ve been amassed over decades. Recently, many of those messages & memories were overwritten with graffiti, Black Lives Matter messages and other political statements, including profanity.
Some fans & tourists say that Graceland’s brick wall should have been off limits for such graffiti. “Elvis always showed love and respect to everyone,” James Burton said in a Facebook post. “We ALL must come together and respect and love each other.”
I’ve been fortunate enough to visit Graceland twice, and one of my favorite experiences is walking by the wall and reading the messages and names of fans all over the world. I signed the wall the first time I went in 2014, and it saddens me to think of the many memories of fans who got the chance to scribble their name on that wall, only to have it overwritten with spray painted messages that have nothing to do with Elvis or his mantra of love for all humanity.
