Jenny’s Top 5 Budget-Friendly Halloween Costume Ideas

Welcome to October! It’s time to start planning your Halloween costume! If you’re still undecided on a costume, here are some of my favorite budget-friendly costume ideas!

  My Mom is the queen of cute costumes on a budget, and this popcorn costume was some of her best work! She painted four pieces of poster board, drew the popcorn logo, and spent hours popping actual popcorn, gluing it on the top - even stringing popcorn to tie into my hair!

  I came in 2nd place at the church Fall Festival costume contest that year.

  The next year, my Mom had the brilliant idea to make me a bushel of grapes costume! I already had purple sweatpants & sweatshirt, so all we had to do was blow up a bunch of purple balloons & pin them to my clothes. I loved being grapes - but it was kind of a pain to trick or treat in.

  It's ok to be lazy with your costume, and I've definitely kept it simple some years. Sometimes, popping in a set of Billy Bob teeth is all you need! Dad and I could barely stop laughing long enough to get a picture.

  Another fun costume that never requires a lot of time or money: 80's chick! Tease your hair, put on any t-shirt of an 80's band, slap on some blue eye shadow, and voila!

  I've done the 80's chick more than once - here I was more Cyndi Lauper than Def Leppard groupie. I think I spent a total of $10 on this outfit; cut up a $3 t-shirt from Hobby Lobby and the tutu was from the Dollar Tree.

  Hair and makeup are what really make an 80's costume - the bigger the hair, the better!

  Life hack: when you can't find a pair of lacy gloves, go buy a cheap pair of lace panties and tie them around your hand to make your own gloves!

  We lived off of a main road growing up and never got any trick-or-treaters, so now that we do get trick-or-treaters, I enjoy dressing up to hand out candy. Here, I kept it basic with some cat makeup and a set of ears. You really don't even need any special face paint; I just used my eyeliner pencil. Always a simple, inexpensive costume choice!

  Last year, I came up with a fun group costume for Cash, Dub & myself: A Bob Ross painting! Dub was Bob Ross, I was a paint palette and Cash was a happy tree. I bought some greenery from the Dollar Tree & hot glued it on a green t-shirt & ball cap; I did have to buy a cheap wig for Bob Ross, and for the paint palette, I cut a scrap piece of cardboard into the shape of a pain palette & tied it around my neck.

Although I love D.I.Y. costumes, I’m not against buying one. There have been times that I have bought a costume, if it was unique and I knew that I’d wear it for many more years. Here are some of my favorite store-bought costumes:

• German Dress

  Bring on the Bratwurst! I still enjoy dressing up as a German girl! My Grandpa (pictured here) loved polka music and playing the accordion (another fun fact: he actually taught ME to play the accordion!) We went to Oktoberfest in Helen every year, so for Halloween, we enjoyed wearing our Oktoberfest outfits as costumes.

  Obviously, I'm more of a homemade costume kinda girl, but one year, my Mom surprised me with this store-bought costume and I LOVED it: I Love Lucy!

  My sister's favorite show growing up was Arthur, so one year I made her a D.W. Reed costume - sewed the dress and ears myself - and she was so stinkin' cute! My Mom made a great Snow White, and I had a Cruella DeVille wig, which was a pretty easy costume to throw together: the only thing I had to buy was the wig. Any black, white or red dress would go great with the wig.

  Another year, I re-used the Cruella wig; this time, I bought a cheap piece of scrap animal fabric and it made the perfect Cruella cape. No one has to know that the red dress is actually a long nightgown! (I taught Sunday School at the time, and my students all wanted their picture taken with "Skunk Hair" Miss Jenny.)
